Everest Base Camp Trek Day 8: Altitude Sickness Survival!
After the triumph of reaching Everest Base Camp, I thought the hardest part was over. I was dead wrong. The real challenge began the moment I woke up. The excitement of achieving such an incredible feat quickly faded, replaced by a pounding headache, nausea, and pure exhaustion. Altitude sickness had me in its grip, and the journey down was going to test my limits like never before.
The moment reality hit—time to head down from Everest Base Camp.
The Helicopter Debate
As I sat down for breakfast in Gorak Shep, my body felt like it was shutting down. My guide, Bhupal, could see the struggle in my eyes. I wasn’t sure if I could make it down on foot. I had insurance that would cover a helicopter evacuation, but the thought of giving up after making it this far? Unthinkable.
Bhupal assured me that I could push through, and that was all the encouragement I needed. Determined to finish the trek on foot, I strapped on my backpack—or rather, Bhupal strapped it on for me. My legs felt like jelly, and my head was spinning, but we took the first steps down the trail.
A tough decision—take the helicopter or push through? I chose the trek.
The Brutal Descent
Descending from Everest Base Camp was no walk in the park. My knees were screaming, and my lungs were still gasping for oxygen. Gravity wasn’t the blessing I thought it would be. Every step jarred my legs, and I had to focus hard just to keep moving.
The trail was empty, eerily quiet, just me, Bhupal, and the towering peaks around us. I felt like I was moving in slow motion, but at least every step brought me closer to lower altitude—and more oxygen.
Every step felt heavier, but the thought of lower altitude kept me moving.
A Much-Needed Break in Pheriche
After hours of grueling descent, Pheriche came into view like a mirage. I stumbled into the teahouse, collapsed into a chair, and wrapped my hands around a hot cup of tea. The warmth was comforting, and for the first time all day, I felt a glimmer of hope. My body was still weak, but I knew I had made it through the hardest part.
Dinner was simple—fried potatoes and eggs—but it was the first proper meal I could stomach since Base Camp. It felt like a small victory in a day full of challenges.
Finding comfort and warmth in Pheriche after a day of pure exhaustion.
A Night of Reflection
As night fell, I took a moment to reflect on the day. I had made it down from Base Camp without giving in to the temptation of a helicopter ride. My body was beaten, but my spirit felt stronger. The altitude sickness wasn’t completely gone, but with every breath, I felt more human.
Survived another day—grateful to rest and recharge.
